This week, Jon and I are witnessing answered prayer. Daiga, Matiss’s 18-year-old sister, let me know Matiss was going to be discharged from the orphanage and move in with her soon. Matiss was incredibly happy about this development. He was emailing me back and forth about it, so excited, especially once I let him know I was happy for him and ok with it. Then, his emotions just flowed electronically and as I reassured him with "I love you's" and "everything will be ok," I got more "I love you too's" in a day than I have in the 10 weeks since he's left. While this new scenario may not be perfect, God has facilitated it and will provide for these two. Matiss loves his sister very much and I have witnessed her deep concern for her little brother. Though Matiss loves us and loved America, his desire was to stay in Latvia. I prayed and hoped for him to leave the orphanage and hopefully he will soon. Praise God! Continue to pray that God will surround these two with the love of Christ and the support they need. Our last remaining hurdle will be addressing one of his recent emails to me, in which he said he still wanted to come to us at Christmas. My tears just flowed... he doesn't realize it yet, but by moving out of the orphanage, it has closed that door for him. The hosting program is for children under the guardianship of the social government, so he would no longer be eligible to travel with the program. I don't want to damper how excited he is right now, so I'm going to leave that explanation for another day!

A Mother's Heart
As I said goodbye to not just one child yesterday, but many, I felt that little void setting in. I’ve heard it before from people, “I don’t know how you can do this.” I can assure you it’s not easy. I didn’t find it, it found me. I call it the hardest, yet greatest blessing of my life… to reach out to kids for whom very few are reaching. Somehow, God continues to stretch this fallible, weak, human, selfish heart of mine. Access is given to some precious, far away, forgotten, forsaken, hurting boys and girls. These little ones creep in and plant almost undetectable seeds that grow and grow and grow. However, the hard part really isn’t loving, it’s trusting. In the words of Chambers, “Our Lord’s confidence in God and in what His grace could do for any man, was so perfect that He despaired of no one.” Well said… His grace is enough.
As I said hello and goodbye to familiar faces, I realized yet again, just how powerful I am not. I cannot promise these children anything with certainty. The only thing I can promise, or any host family for that matter, is the state of our hearts, which are full of love for them. They cannot leave without knowing with 100% certainty that they have been and are loved. Someone, somewhere thinks they are pretty great. And, considering there are few people cheering for them, I’d say they leave richly blessed in many ways.
As I know some of you are wondering specifically about Matiss’s future, I want to address what I can about that. Jon and I do not have clear direction about adopting Matiss at this moment. We don’t have a no, but we don’t clearly have a yes. In fact, Jon felt he was sensing a need to wait and be patient, so that’s the way we are operating. He does have extended family in regular contact with him, yet he is in the orphanage. We do not know why, but wish that situation could be different for him. Children over age 12 are given choice regarding foreign adoption. Even if we did move forward, it's possible because of these family connections, he could say no. That would be understandable. Basically, there are some special circumstances, it isn't an “open and shut” case. As we continue to pray for God to reveal His plan, we realize even Matiss couldn’t make a healthy, educated decision about adoption after only 5 weeks. We love Matiss, but God loves him all the more, and we trust in His will for his little life and will walk in the ways he directs us regarding it.
Now for the good news… Matiss and I can email one another. My limited Latvian will get a good workout. I waited until the last weekend to ask him about this, as I wanted to make certain I had done everything to build trust with him so he wouldn’t consider it an invasion of his space. We pray this opens doors of opportunity through conversation. Second, I get to see him the first week in September. The New Horizons team heads back to Latvia to interview and select the children for Christmas hosting. I really prayed about this, prior to Matiss’s arrival, to make certain it wasn’t done with selfish motive and I sensed God’s affirmation uniquely, so I’m thrilled to be a part of the team and equally thrilled to get to see Matiss for a couple of hours. Again, Jon and I pray that this subsequent visit goes well and is well received by him. On the horizon is Christmas hosting and the possibility that we could host him again at that time.

The Concert
When the house lights dimmed and the concert was about to begin, the mother returned to her seat and discovered that the child was missing…
Suddenly, the curtains parted and spotlights focused on the impressive Steinway on stage. In horror, the mother saw her little boy sitting at the keyboard, innocently picking out Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. At that moment, the great piano master made his entrance, quickly moved to the piano, and whispered in the boy's ear, "Don't quit, keep playing."
Leaning over, Paderewski reached down with his left hand and began filling in a bass part. Soon his right arm reached around to the other side of the child and he added a running obbligaton. Together, the old master and the young novice transformed what could have been a frightening situation into a wonderfully creative experience.
The audience was so mesmerized that they couldn't recall what else the great master played. Only the classic, Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. Perhaps that's the way it is with God. What we can accomplish on our own is hardly noteworthy. We try our best, but the results aren't always graceful, flowing music. However, with the hand of the Master, our life's work can truly be beautiful. The next time you set out to accomplish great feats, listen carefully. You may hear the voice of the Master, whispering in your ear, "Don't quit, keep playing."

Welcome Dinner
Saturday was the Welcome Dinner. It's where all the Georgia hosted kids, within driving distance, come together with their families. We will have several of these group events, it's a part of the Hosting program, allows the chaperones to see that the kids are ok, allows the kids to see that their freinds are ok, etc. You get the picture. Well, it was held at Dave and Busters, which has food, but more importantly is also a huge arcade with tons of games. All the kids were lovin' life in this place. Probably his favorite was a virtual boxing game, you actually put gloves on your hand and punch at a screen, it also sense your movement and "punches" at you. I thought the kid was going to lunge through the screen trying to take this guy out. He's one tough little cookie. The game goes on for like 3 minutes and all the while you are moving and punching. He was sweating by the end, but so excited. He also loved when he hit the 1000 ticket mark on one of the games and it proceeded to take about 5 minutes to feed him all those tickets. Oh, and tonight was the best part. I had taken a nap when we got home, so I got up and realized he still needed pants for church or baznica in Latvian. I told him we needed to go buy pants. So, Jon elected to hang out at home and it was just he and I. We did not find pants. I'm convinced you cannot find pants to fit this child. 12 slim too big, 10 slim too small. 10 regular too big, 8 regular, too short. Is there such a thing as an 11 slim? I digress... Shoe Carnival was next door and he also needed shoes. We left with 3 pair! He found adidas sandals, Nike tennis shoes and some soccer cleats. He picked out Adidas and Nike, because he knows those names. The tennis shoe colors are Auburn colors, I'm certain that has to mean something spiritual right? (Jon loves Auburn) He was smiling from ear to ear when he put those shoes on. Then, when he saw the cleats, he was downright giddy! I had already taught him, on the previous pairs, to put them on, walk around, try them out. When he laced the cleats, he literally took off running. I guess there was no sense in walking around in those when, if you wear them, you are running. So, he tested them by running and kicking into the air all over the store! After we left, we got Chick-fil-A for the first time, he loved that too. I suppose because he was so "full" of life and goodness, that he was singing with the radio all the way home and chattering up a storm. I thought he was going to sleep in the adidas sandals, but he did take them off. What a good day. What a blessing to be able to bless him in such a way. Now, when he walks, he might strut. Praise the Lord, because he deserves to strut a little in life.

Less than 24 hours!
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I have appointed you a prophet to the nations." Jeremiah 1:5
God gave me a specific word as I prayed about accepting the opportunity to travel with New Horizons to Russia and Latvia back in February, in order to meet orphaned children who could potentially come back to America in the summer.
“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Matthew 19:14, Mark 10:14, Luke 18:16
I knew it was His affirmation for the trip. These children were to be given a chance, to be brought to Him through the 5 week influence of loving, Godly, Christian families and churches who would make it a priority to pray with them, take them to church and ultimately give all glory and credit to God, their maker, for ushering them to us.
Now, with all that said, it’s still a little scary, isn’t it? That's why we are all in this together. Some of you may interact with Matiss. I know it’s hard to know what to say and how to say it, but I want to encourage you with this scripture that brings me peace when God sends me on a “foreign” mission.
Then I said, Alas, Lord GOD! Behold, I do not know how to speak, because I am a youth." But the LORD said to me, Do not say, I am a youth, because everywhere I send you, you shall go, And all that I command you, you shall speak. Do not be afraid of them, For I am with you to deliver you, declares the LORD. Then the LORD stretched out His hand and touched my mouth, and the LORD said to me, Behold, I have put My words in your mouth. See, I have appointed you this day over the nations and over the kingdoms, To pluck up and to break down, To destroy and to overthrow, To build and to plant. Jeremiah 1:6-10
Our host families, their families and friends, have been appointed to nations. Praise and thank Him for just a moment for the wonderful things he has done for us. Now, one last verse, this one I actually got from Him during my trip to Latvia and Russia. Though I knew I had his direction to go on the trip, I needed more from God that this was indeed a ministry to present to our church. Again, I knew immediately upon receiving this scripture from the Lord, five days into my trip.
“Lift up your eyes round about, and see. They all gather together, they come to you. Your sons will come from afar, and your daughters will be carried in the arms.” Isaiah 60:4
Father God, as you have spoken in your word before our presence was even imagined on this earth, you were familiar with each of us and prepared, dedicated and permitted us to stand at the threshold we stand at. As your spokespersons, descendants of Abraham serving other descendents of Abraham, we should have all confidence in you as the one who has brought us forth and stretched us to these outer boundaries. We have been appointed, for such a time as this, to establish your presence in the lives of “sons and daughters.” You have planted in us, so that we might now, plant in others. Thank you for the privilege and honor to join you in your work in the lives of Latvian and Russian orphans. May we, as your salt and light, dispel darkness and bring about a thirst and hunger for You. In the name of our Hope and Deliverer, Jesus Christ, Amen.

About Matiss...

Matiss is an orphan who is living in an orphanage in Latvia. In late December, God led me to the web pages of the New Horizons orphan hosting ministry. It was exactly what my pastor and I had been looking for as a way to introduce our church, Fortified Hills Baptist, to orphan ministry. New Horizons makes two mission trips per year to interview and select orphans to be hosted in Christian homes in America. The spring trip selects children for the 5 week summer hosting and the fall trip selects children for the 4 week Christmas hosting. So, I contacted New Horizons (www.newhorizonsforchildren.org) and before I knew it, I was signed up to leave 6 weeks later for the Russia and Latvia spring/February interview trip to identify the kids to bring to the states this summer.
After the dust settled and I started planning for the trip, I began by looking at pictures of children from past hosting periods and looked through the kids that didn’t get selected at Christmas. My ever supportive husband, Jon, looked through my materials and made the comment, “this looks like a good kid.” Excited to see who caught his eye, I leaned over and said, “but that’s a boy, what do I do with a boy?” I would find out that "boy" was named Matiss. He is 13 years old, but about the size of an American 10 year old, probably weighing about 65 pounds. As is with most orphans, their "13" isn't our "13," both physically and mentally. So, trusting that God had possibly laid a child on my husband’s heart, I went to Latvia with this little boy in the back of my mind, believing God would show me what I needed to see so He could lead me in His will. He did.
As I observed Matiss the day we visited his orphanage, he was the exact opposite of what would probably stand out to me. I’m pretty demonstrative and outgoing and this little boy was quiet, reserved and shy. He could have easily faded into the chaos around him had God not pointed him out ahead of this trip. Almost immediately, it clicked… this little boy was so similar to Jon, with that same quiet, laid back, gentle spirit. But, I could see so much more. I could see the potential in this boy to become the Godly man my husband had become, thinking how much positive influence Jon could have with him, even if only for 5 weeks.
Being teachers, we are “off” for the summer and will have so much time to spend with him. Jon has football workouts and practices in the summer, but we’re sure Matiss will love going to the field house and hanging out at the stadium! As for my role as “host mom,” admittedly I don’t know a lot about “boys.” I pray God equips me to be exactly what he needs. In the meantime, I’m brushing up on my turtle pancake skills, perfecting homemade chocolate chip cookies, learning about matchbox cars, hunting the largest capacity water gun and keeping my eye open for special little touches to add to his room.
Please join us in prayer for our little man. Pray that God is preparing his heart and mind to receive what HE is preparing us, his host mom and dad, to pour into him. Pray that God brings all things in order with his paperwork and ours, and that God would place a hedge of protection, provision and favor around him until he arrives. He will arrive in Atlanta at 9:45pm, June 27th, and will return to Latvia on August 1st.
